Around 25 sporting and recreational clubs cater for a variety of interests, from our popular football and rugby clubs, to a whole host of minority sports. For a small annual fee, a student sports card and AU membership card allows students to join the Athletic Union (AU) clubs.

What is the Athletic Union?

The Athletic Union is the department of the Students’ Union that represents, co-ordinates, administers and promotes sporting and recreational activities for students. We have over twenty sports clubs ranging from football, rugby and hockey to martial arts, squash and volleyball.

What is BUCS?

BUCS stands for British Universities and Colleges Sport. BUCS is the governing body of student sport and enables all higher education institutes to compete under one umbrella.

BUCS competitions are open to students from all of our sites and league matches are held on Wednesday afternoons.

Local Leagues

In addition to competing in BUCS competitions the Athletic Union also enters teams in local league competitions (WMVA) for Volleyball. This allows students who can’t normally compete on Wednesday afternoons to compete at evenings and weekends.

International & National Competitions

There is also the opportunity to compete nationally in a range of other sports, especially those in the BUCS programme such as Track & Field, Swimming and Tennis. Further details can be found in the Club pages. Elite students also have the chance to represent the university at international competitions.

Club Training

All Athletic Union Clubs have weekly training sessions for which you need a Student Sports Card and AU Membership Card to participate.
