Question Time questions & minutes
The Candidates’ Question Time is a one-off opportunity where all the candidates will be available to answer your questions.
• What will they do for you?
• How will they keep students informed of what they’ve been up to?
• How do they plan to make themselves available and accessible to students?
• How seriously will they take their roles?
These are just some of the questions you could put to candidates.
The candidates’ manifestos are added to the website and you can have a look at why they think they’re right for the role and what they plan to do if elected. Have a good read through these as they’re bound to give you ideas of the types of questions you could put to candidates
Submitting Questions
If you’d like to put a question to the candidates, here’s what you’ll need to do:
Send the question, who you’d like it put to (this can be all candidates running for a particular position or an individual candidate) and your name (unless you’d like to remain anonymous in which case just write anonymous) to our Deputy Returning Officer, Matt Knight, by e-mail to m.knight@wlv.ac.uk or text to 07939 288895.
If you’re sending your message by text please start the message with ‘Question Time’ and if you’re sending an email please put ‘Question for Candidates’ as the title of the email.
Please note, that due to time restrictions, we cannot guarantee that there will be time for all questions to be put to candidates.
This page will contain the questions and answers from the Candidates Question Time event, which will be taking place in The Lounge, SU on City Campus from 6pm on Thursday 11th March. You can view the question time running order here.
Question Time Regulations
1. Purpose and Attendance
1.1 Question Time is a chance for the candidates to communicate to the electorate why they are the best person for the position and to explain how they will make a difference for students. It is also a chance for student members of the Union to ask questions about candidates’ suitability for the posts and their manifesto promises.
1.2 All candidates are required to attend the Question Time session in The Lounge, MD Building (City) on Thursday 11th March 2009 from 6pm to 8.30pm.
Failure to attend without submitting acceptable apologies at least 24 hours in advance to M.Knight@wlv.ac.uk may result in a penalty for the candidate as detailed in the Elections Bye Laws.
2. Officer Trustee Positions and Contested Positions
2.1 Each candidate for an Officer Trustee position will be given a 45-second speech (timed) to explain why they are the best candidate.
2.2 Candidates for Officer Trustee positions will then be required to answer approximately three questions in a panel format. The panel will be chaired by the Chair of the Elections Committee. For example, the Chair will ask questions to all candidates for President and each candidate will be given one minute (timed) to answer. The panel will then take questions from the floor for approximately five minutes.
3. Contested Non-Officer-Trustee Positions
3.1 Each candidate for any contested Non-Officer-Trustee position will be given a 45-second speech (timed) to explain why they are the best candidate.
3.2 Candidates for contested Non-Officer-Trustee positions will then be required to answer questions from the floor for approximately five minutes.
4. Uncontested Positions
4.1 Each candidate for an uncontested position will be given 30-second to make a speech to explain the issues they are campaigning on and why they are a worthy candidate for the position they are standing for.
4.2 The uncontested candidates will then take questions from the floor for approximately five minutes.
5. Format for Asking Questions to the Panel
5.1 Any current student may submit a question in advance to the panel for Officer Trustee positions or any contested position. The questions can be emailed before 2pm on the day of the meeting to M.Knight@wlv.ac.uk or can be presented at the start of the meeting to the Marshalling Point in the Question Time venue or texted to 07939 288895. The Marshalls will forward appropriate questions to the Chair of the Elections Committee before the start of each panel. These questions will be asked to all candidates for the relevant position and may not be aimed at an individual candidate alone.
5.2 At the discretion of the Chair, and subject to available time, there will be 10 minutes set aside at the end of the event for questions to any individual candidate running in the elections.
5.3 The Elections Committee can ask for clarification on a candidate’s answer if they believe the candidate has not addressed the answer sufficiently, time permitting.
5.4 Under no circumstances will offensive, disruptive, discriminatory or abusive behaviour be tolerated at Question Time and the penalties in the Elections Bye Laws may apply.
