Sexual Health Awareness & Guidance (SHAG) Week
25th – 29th January 2010

SHAG Week is back and this year the Students’ Union is taking a completely different approach to promoting sexual health on campus.
Sexual health has always been a bit of a taboo subject because of the stigma attached to it. We want to break down the stigma connected to sexual health and so, rather than tip-toeing around this topic, we are going to use shock tactics to raise awareness and deal with the matter head on.
Let’s talk about sex baby!
Everyone has sex at some point in their lives and so our message is simple - if you’re having sex, make sure it’s safe sex! By having unprotected sex you are more at risk of developing a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
SHAG Week is aimed at raising awareness of the different types of STI’s that can be developed through unprotected sex and to encourage students to get tested and take appropriate action before it’s too late.
We will be taking our STIng Book around with us during the week illustrating the different types of STI’s and their symptoms, so that students have the opportunity to identify them for themselves. Be warned though, it’s shocking!!
Advice and Support
Our campaign is supported by Moo Moo Marketing who will be offering incentives and administering free Chlamydia screening with our Welfare & Campaigns VP, Matt Ward, on each campus between Mon 25th and Thurs 28th January. We will also be handing out free condoms donated by Terrence Higgins Trust and information leaflets supplied by Wolverhampton NHS Primary Care Trust.
It’s Party Time!
SHAG Week isn’t all serious; it’s also Refreshers Week and so we’ll be holding a fancy dress STIng Party on Tuesday 26th January at Oceana in Wolverhampton. So come along as either: General Gonorrhoea, Captain Chlamydia or Sergeant Syphilis and enjoy some fun and games – as well as sampling some very interesting cocktails! We’ll also be administering Chlamydia screening on Monday 25th January at Revolution Bar in Walsall.
