Grants and Allowances
ADULT DEPENDANT'S GRANT (assessed by your LA or SLC)
For full time students, if you have a husband, wife or partner or another adult member of your family who depends on you financially, you may be eligible. Up to £2,642 a year, how much you get will depend on your income and that of your adult dependants.
CHILDCARE GRANT (assessed by your LA or SLC)
Full time students with dependant children in registered and approved childcare, for one child up to £148.75 a week throughout the year rising to £255.00 for two children or more.
N.B. You cannot get this grant if you claim the childcare element of the working Tax Credit from the Inland Revenue.
PARENT'S LEARNING ALLOWANCE (assessed by your LA or SLC)
This allowance is for help with course-related costs for students who have dependant children. Up to £1,508 a year, how much you get depends on your income and that of your dependants (including your husband, wife or partner).
DISABLED STUDENTS' ALLOWANCE (assessed by your LA or SLC)
Available to both full time and part time students with disabilities (including post-graduates). Part time students must be studying at least 50% of a full time course.
These allowances help with costs you incur in attending your course, as a direct result of your disability. You can apply at any time before or during your course. Amounts vary depending on your needs.
MAINTENANCE GRANT- For Students who started September 2006-onwards (assessed by your LA or SLC)
Those from the lowest income families could be eligible for a non-repayable maintenance grant of up to £2,906 per year. Your Local Authority/SLC are responsible for making this assessment.
If you are eligible for the maintenance grant you may be eligible for the University Start Right Bursary, the amount you could be awarded is linked to your household income.
ACCESS TO LEARNING FUND (ALF)
In addition to your statutory funding, students who are experiencing financial hardship may be eligible to apply for further financial assistance from the Access to Learning Fund.
You need to have exhausted all other financial means, i.e. overdraft, student loan etc, before applying to the Access to learning Fund. The Fund is available to both full-time and part-time home students however, part time students must be working towards a minimum of 60 credits (or 30 credits if the student is disabled).
