and ensure you get you money in time

N.b. there are no emergency loans available for returning students so re-apply NOW to avoid disappointment in September!

New students entering Higher Education in September 2009 will be assessed by the Student Loans Company (SLC).  Existing students will still be assessed by their Local Authority (LA) for their student loan. Students will need to meet the basic residency requirement (three years ordinarily resident within the UK before the first day of academic year).

Everyone is entitled to the non-means tested element of the loan. The remaining means tested element you may receive will depend upon the income of your parents or you/your spouse if you are independent.

If you have previously studied in Higher Education you will not be eligible for the student loan unless you are continuing your study's towards certain professional qualifications i.e. medical doctor, dentist, veterinary doctor or architect.

The maximum loan available to New Students in the academic year 09/10 including the means tested element, are:

Students living away from home:

£4,950 (£4,583)*

For students living at home:

£3,838 (£3,483)*

*Figures in brackets = loan available in final year.

Part time Students

Both new and existing students can apply for a course grant of up to £260 towards travel, books and other course costs. A fee grant is also available. The maximum amount available to you will depend upon what percentage of a full-time course you are studying.

Entitlement to the grants will depend on your income and that of your husband, wife or partner.

Your LA/SLC will work out how much support you can get.
