Staying Healthy
Staying mentally and physically healthy is very important, particularly at times of the year when students are under pressure from their studies. Obviously maintaining a healthy diet, eating regularly and sensibly will help you maintain a healthy frame of mind. Taking regular exercise is also vital for your physical and mental health.
One of the first things students should do when arriving at University is to register with a doctor and a dentist.
DOCTORS
Choose the GP you would like to register with and take your medical card with you when you visit. Explain you are a student and ask whether the doctor is willing to accept you as a National Health Service (NHS) patient. A doctor can refuse to take you on if his/her list is full. If this is the case then simply ask elsewhere.
If you don't have a medical card and you are not a
GP lists are also available from the Advice and Support Centre and the Students' Union receptions at all campuses.
DENTISTS
It is also important to see a dentist regularly. Even if you are not having any problems it is worthwhile visiting a dentist, as prevention is often better than cure!
You can get a list of local dentists from the Advice and Support Centre, or use link below.
OPTICIANS
As a student you will be reading more than ever before, during lectures, at home, in the library it is important that you have an eye test to ascertain any need for glasses or change of lenses, so don't neglect your eyesight!
PRESCRIPTON CHARGES
If you are a full time student you will be expected to pay for prescribed medicines: however, if you are a part-time student on benefits you will be exempt as a consequence of your eligibility for benefit.
Full time students can apply for a discount using a HC1 form, as the student loan is classed as income. For a refund of costs for dental or optical treatment and for stays in hosiptal, students will need to complete a HC5 form. Both forms are available from the Advice and Support Centre.
